It was indeed a life-changing experience!

"The time spent with children is unforgettable. I was able to improve teaching skills as well as leadership qualities amazingly through this internship.

I got a nice opportunity to go on an exchange from AIESEC Colombo North Local Committee. They matched me to the Amithabaha centre project which is conducted by UTM of Malaysia. After discussing with the host committee, I went to Malaysia on 2nd of February 2014.There was another friend of Sri Lanka selected to this project & both of us went together. The journey of the flight and this whole internship absolutely for me is a great experience. After arriving Kuala Lumpur International Airport I was fascinated by seeing the size and busyness of the airport. It was the first culture shock for me. But Malaysian people are very helpful and they helped us alot.

Our next task was to take the transit. As host committee informed me, I got the transit express to the Seltan Bus Station. From the bus station I took the bus to Johr-Bahru. It’s a long hour journey; about 3 and half hours spent for the journey. On the way I was able to feel the beauty of the nature. Then I had to get off from the UTM in Johr-bahru. After getting off there one member of AISEC UTM came there to pick up me as they promised, to the Amitabha centre. It’s a big relief for me, because after such a long journey I felt so tired. Then within half hour I reached to my accommodation. Oh! It was obviously like a “fairy world”. I felt such a feeling, when I entered to the Amitabaha center as that building was filled up with lot of children. They all warmly welcomed me. However it was an Orphanage I felt like it was like a home.

My AIESEC friend introduced me to the orphanage. “Principal” and the four ladies there: they called as “MAMA”; “schau mama”-[wise principal], “yo mama”-[who take care of children], “u mama”-[who take care of the storage, food] and “so mama”-[who is cooking food]. From next day morning, we (including other interns) had to start our project. My job role was to be a teacher & the tasks that we’d have to complete during our internship were explained by Mrs.Chloe who is the manager of the orphanage.

There were already 4 interns including me and my Sri Lankan friend. One from China named Fiona; she is our [me & my Sri Lankan friend’s] roommate her and Patric from Indonesia. Then as we discussed we divided the teaching subjects among 4 of us. Me & my Sri Lankan friend taught English & Maths, Fiona taught Chinese & Patiric taught Malay.

The time spent with children was never unforgettable. I was able to improve teaching skills as well as leadership qualities from my job role. The culture sharing event which was organized by AISEC (UTM) University of technology is also one of unforgettable event. Subsequently AEISEC provided me lot of exposures, experiences, as well as improve my leadership qualities and teaching skills through this exchange. We got a chance to travel around Malaysia throughout my stay there. Finally, after successfully completing my internship I arrived to Sri Lanka on 2nd of March 2014.

Just like mine, I'm waiting for your story!
